One Band That Didn’t Make it into Mixtape – And Everything Else We Learned Chatting with the Game’s Creators

One Band That Didn’t Make it into Mixtape – And Everything Else We Learned Chatting with the Game’s Creators

The creative director and producer for the upcoming indie title Mixtape sat down for a chat recently, and they spilled a lot of details about the game's development. One of the biggest surprises was the revelation of a specific band that was originally on their wish list but ended up being too expensive to license. While they didn't name the exact group, they hinted it was a major act from the 1990s whose catalog would have eaten up a huge chunk of the budget. Instead, the team focused on curating a soundtrack of lesser-known but equally evocative tracks that fit the game's tone.

The interview also covered the game's dialogue style. The creators said they were heavily inspired by classic "hangout movies" like Dazed and Confused and The Breakfast Club. They wanted the conversations between characters to feel natural, meandering, and full of the kind of awkward pauses and half-finished sentences that real teenagers use. The goal was to make players feel like they were just hanging out with friends, not listening to scripted exposition.

Finally, the team warned that Mixtape might not be what players are expecting based on the initial trailer. While the reveal got a ton of buzz for its flashy visuals and nostalgic music, the actual gameplay is more about quiet exploration and emotional storytelling than high-octane action. In Mixtape, every song is a unique level, but those levels are designed to be personal and introspective, not chaotic. The creators stressed that this is a game about memory and the bittersweet feeling of growing up, and they hope players will approach it with an open mind.
