The Disney and Final Fantasy crossover does sound like a hard sell on paper. But apparently, the man who gave it the green light can't recall doing so. Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner recently admitted that he has no memory of why he approved the creation of Kingdom Hearts, the iconic action RPG that mashed up Mickey Mouse with Square Enix's brooding characters.
During a recent interview, Eisner was asked about the bizarre origin of the franchise. He confessed that the decision is a complete blank in his mind. "I don't remember greenlighting that at all," he said. "It sounds like something I would have said no to." Eisner speculated that the pitch must have been incredibly compelling, or perhaps he was distracted during the meeting. He suggested that the team might have simply run with the idea and he just signed off on it later without much thought.
Kingdom Hearts debuted in 2002 on the PlayStation 2. It combined classic Disney worlds with Final Fantasy characters and original protagonists like Sora. The first game was a massive hit, leading to a long-running series of sequels and spin-offs. Despite the initial strangeness of the concept, the franchise has sold millions of copies worldwide. Eisner's forgetfulness adds a strange footnote to the story of one of gaming's most unlikely successes.
