It is amazing how fast a business can move when you are the business. For years, the conversation around games journalism has been a funeral dirge. Layoffs, site closures, and a general sense of burnout have defined the industry. Yet, I find myself in a strange position. I am quietly, and perhaps foolishly, optimistic about what comes next.
The old model was broken. It relied on massive traffic spikes, SEO bait, and a constant churn of previews and reviews that felt interchangeable. The audience grew tired of it, and so did the writers. But out of that wreckage, something leaner is emerging. Creators are building their own outlets, not as corporations, but as individual voices. They are using newsletters, small podcasts, and direct subscriptions. They answer to their readers, not to an ad dashboard.
This shift is not without risk. It is hard work, and the income is unstable. But it is honest. The best criticism has always come from a personal place, from a specific point of view. That is what is returning. We are moving away from the idea of a single, monolithic voice and toward a chorus of many. It might be smaller, but it is also more sustainable. That is why I hold out hope. The future is not a big website. It is a thousand small ones, each with a pulse.
