Fumito Ueda Opens Up About Gen Atlas, His First Game Since Shadow of the Colossus

Fumito Ueda Opens Up About Gen Atlas, His First Game Since Shadow of the Colossus

The legendary game director behind Shadow of the Colossus and Ico has finally shared real details about his next project. Fumito Ueda, who left Team Ico years ago to form his own studio, recently spoke at length about Gen Atlas, a game that has been shrouded in mystery since its first teaser.

In a new interview, Ueda clarified what Gen Atlas is not. It is not a sequel to any of his previous works. It is not a direct follow-up to Shadow of the Colossus, despite some fans hoping for a connection. He also stressed that the game does not feature the same kind of giant creature battles that defined his most famous title. Instead, Gen Atlas focuses on a smaller, more intimate experience.

Ueda described the game as being about a boy and a giant robot-like being, but he warned against expecting the same emotional beats as his earlier games. The relationship between the two characters will be different, and the gameplay will involve puzzle-solving and exploration rather than combat. He compared the scale to Ico, saying the world is compact but dense.

The director also talked about the long development time. He admitted that his studio, genDESIGN, is small and that they have been refining the concept for years. He wants to avoid over-explaining the story, leaving room for players to interpret the world themselves. No release date has been announced, but Ueda said the team is now in the final stages of production.

Fans of Ueda's work will likely find familiar themes in Gen Atlas: solitude, companionship, and a mysterious landscape. But the director is clearly trying to carve a new path, not repeat old successes.
