A Calming Indie Game Made My Busy Day at Summer Game Fest Better

A Calming Indie Game Made My Busy Day at Summer Game Fest Better

Summer Game Fest is always a whirlwind. For me, it was the busiest day of the year, packed with back-to-back appointments, crowded demo halls, and the constant pressure to see everything. I expected to feel overwhelmed from the moment I walked in. Instead, the first thing I played slowed me down completely.

That game was "Way To The Woods." It is a small indie title where you guide a deer and a fawn through a mysterious, abandoned landscape. There is no combat, no timer, and no loud explosions. You just walk through the woods, solve gentle puzzles, and take in the atmosphere. The lighting is soft, the music is quiet, and the animals move with a natural, unhurried pace.

Sitting down with it felt like a reset button. While the rest of the festival buzzed with noise and flashing screens, this game asked me to be patient and observant. It reminded me that not every game needs to be a high-stakes thrill ride. Some of the best experiences are the ones that let you breathe.

By the time I finished the demo, I felt genuinely refreshed. It was a strange feeling to have at a massive event, but a welcome one. "Way To The Woods" turned what could have been a stressful start into a peaceful one. It was exactly what I needed.
