About seven months ago, I finally splurged on a new gaming computer. It is packed with one of AMD's top-tier X3D processors, 32 gigs of RAM, and a graphics card that can handle ray tracing without breaking a sweat. It is the kind of machine that should be running Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings or pushing 4K frame rates in the latest AAA titles. Instead, I find myself spending most of my time playing games that look like they were dug up from a 2008 time capsule.
I am talking about pixel-art roguelikes, low-poly horror games, and indie titles that run on a toaster. There is a strange, almost guilty pleasure in booting up a game that barely taxes the system. The fans stay silent. The power draw is minimal. And yet, the experience is often more engaging than the photorealistic blockbusters sitting in my library. Part of it is nostalgia, sure. But a bigger part is that these "potato quality" games tend to focus on gameplay, story, or atmosphere rather than graphical fidelity. They do not need a 12-core processor to make me care about a character or to make me jump at a shadow.
I have tried to justify the purchase by telling myself I am future-proofing. Maybe next year's games will finally use all that horsepower. But deep down, I know the truth. I built a monster of a machine just to play a game that looks like it was drawn with crayons. And honestly, I am okay with that.
