'Star Trek' Goes To the Scary Frontier in Next Major Video Game

'Star Trek' Goes To the Scary Frontier in Next Major Video Game

Prepare to boldly go into horror and psychological thrills with Bloober Team's "Star Trek: Shadow Frontier." The Polish studio known for "The Medium" and the upcoming "Silent Hill 2" remake is taking the franchise to a much darker corner of the galaxy. Instead of phasers set to stun and diplomatic first contacts, this game focuses on the unknown terrors lurking in deep space.

Details remain scarce, but the project is described as a narrative-driven, single-player experience. Players will step into the boots of a Starfleet officer stranded on a derelict vessel adrift near a mysterious anomaly. The ship's logs tell a story of a crew that slowly lost its grip on reality. Bloober Team has confirmed the game will lean heavily on psychological horror, using the isolation of space to create dread. Think less "Wrath of Khan" and more "Event Horizon" with a Starfleet badge.

The game is set in an era of the "Star Trek" timeline that has not been fully explored in interactive media, allowing the developers freedom to craft a new threat. While combat will exist, the core loop revolves around puzzle solving, environmental storytelling, and managing the protagonist's deteriorating mental state. "Shadow Frontier" aims to challenge the optimistic core of "Star Trek" by asking what happens when exploration leads to something that should never have been found. A release window has not been announced, but the game is expected on PC and current-generation consoles.
