If you’re a fan of board games like I am, you’ve probably heard the siren call of expansions. You know what I’m talking about. You’re sitting there, perfectly content with your favorite game, and then bam!—a shiny new expansion promises to "enhance gameplay," "add replayability," or "completely transform your experience." Sounds tempting, right? But here’s the million-dollar question: are board game expansions actually worth the investment, or are they just a clever cash grab?
Let’s dig into this together and figure out whether that extra box of goodies is really worth it for your next game night or if it's just going to gather dust on the shelf.
For example, if the original game is a delicious pizza, the expansion is like extra toppings—pepperoni, mushrooms, or even pineapple (don’t @ me). But just like pizza toppings, not every expansion is going to suit your taste.
It’s also worth mentioning that expansions can act as a band-aid for games that initially felt incomplete. Have you ever played a base game and thought, “This is good, but it could be great”? Sometimes expansions exist to fix those gaps. Other times, they’re a way for publishers to capitalize on a popular game’s success. (Cynical? Maybe. True? Definitely.)
For instance, a game like Catan is fantastic on its own, but the Seafarers or Cities & Knights expansions take the experience to a whole new level. Suddenly, you’re not just trading sheep and bricks—you’re navigating seas or building metropolises.
Take Dominion, for example. The base game is a blast, but add expansions like Intrigue or Prosperity, and you’ve got an almost infinite number of card combinations. It’s like unlocking an entirely new playlist for a game you already love.
If you’re not sure an expansion will significantly improve your experience, it can feel like throwing money at a problem that didn’t exist in the first place.
And let’s not forget setup time. If an expansion adds so many extra pieces and mechanics that it doubles the time it takes to get a game started, you might find yourself opting to skip it altogether.
And don’t even get me started on those expansions that don’t fit neatly into the original box. Looking at you, Arkham Horror: The Card Game.
- Do You Love the Base Game? If the original game is one of your all-time favorites, an expansion is usually a safe bet. After all, it’s an opportunity to get more of something you already adore.
- Do You Play It Often? If the base game rarely makes it to your table, chances are the expansion won’t either. But if it’s a regular in your rotation, adding some new content can keep things exciting.
- Does the Expansion Solve a Problem or Add Value? Some expansions genuinely improve the base game by fixing imbalances, expanding the narrative, or increasing replayability. Others feel more like fluff. Do your homework before you buy.
- Can You Afford It? Let’s not sugarcoat this. Board games are a luxury, and expansions even more so. Make sure it’s within your budget before you splurge.
If you’re on the fence, try to borrow or playtest an expansion before committing. And don’t feel pressured to buy every expansion just because it exists. Sometimes, the base game is all you really need.
So, are board game expansions worth the investment? The answer is…it depends. (Yeah, I know, that’s a bit of a cop-out.) But hey, if the expansion adds joy to your game nights and fits your budget, then I say go for it. Life’s too short to play boring board games.

Great article! Expansions can enhance gameplay and replay value significantly, but personal preferences and budget should guide whether they’re worth the investment for each player.
